Portfolio > Video Work

Since 2005, Wendy Maruyama has incorporated video into her furniture and sculptural installations, a direction inspired in part by the emergence of domestic “entertainment centers” and the increasing presence of screens within everyday life. Building upon the digital collage and photographic imagery explored in the early “Turning Japanese” series, the introduction of video extended the work from static tableau into moving narrative environments.

Earlier works functioned as intimate dioramas in which imagery operated symbolically within the cabinet or furniture form. The videos introduced a new level of animation and performative presence, allowing the images to move, unfold, and inhabit these constructed spaces more dynamically. Presented separately from the objects themselves, the videos can be viewed independently while remaining conceptually linked to the sculptural works.

All videos were created and edited by Maruyama using Final Cut Pro. Some combine montages of still imagery and video footage, while others were filmed in the studio and developed through layered editing processes.

Maruyama credits Anderson Ranch Arts Center for providing the support, creative environment, and technical resources that helped foster this direction in her work.
