For loved ones lost
The loss of loved ones reshapes the world in quiet, irreversible ways. Within the span of three years, Maruyama lost her mother and father, numerous aunts and uncles, close friends, and a beloved dog named Harry. In the wake of this accumulation of grief, her work began to shift. Moving away from the shadowed tones of the Black Mirror series, she turned toward luminous color and opposing forms, searching for traces of beauty within absence. Borrowing titles from melancholic songs, these works hold sorrow and lightness in delicate balance.
